North Shore PS is situated in the northern suburbs of Geelong, in a residential area bounded by industry, major arterial roads and the railway link. Most students attending North Shore live east of the Princes Highway and are able to walk or ride to school. Of those outside these areas, many children have had parents attending the school as students, who seek to have their children educated at North Shore.
It is noted that an increasing number of students have, as their primary care giver, relatives other than their parents. A significant number of families at North Shore are one-parent families.
Like other schools in the Corio/Norlane catchment, enrolments have dropped over the past decade and currently stands at 155. The boy/girl ratio is very balanced and there are few Koori or Non-English Speaking Background students at North Shore.
92% of families are in receipt of EMA and consequently the Student Family Occupation index is 0.84. There is a transience factor of 10%. The nearest primary school is St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Parish School, with the nearest government primary school being Corio South PS. Whilst our students transition into approximately 8 secondary schools, the majority of our exiting students go to Norlane High School.
Our teachers demonstrate high levels of innovation, skill and commitment in their teaching and clearly communicate high expectations for our students, supporting them through teaching aimed at a student’s point of need within small class sizes to experience success. Through Restorative Practices, we provide a consistent, fair and effective approach to behaviour management and minimising bullying and harassment.
Our community experiences differing forms of disadvantage that the school engages partnerships with different agencies, services and organisations in order to strengthen our families and increase the opportunity for learners to be successful.
