North Shore Mathematics

Math is all around us in our everyday lives. From the Supermarket, corner shop, to buying fish and chips and paying for the bus. Therefore within our classrooms we endeavour to make classroom activities reflect our everyday lives, making it as meaningful and useful for our students as possible.

We do this through many hands on, real life activities that cater for the different  range of student’s abilities.

We also have a variety of other math practices in the school to encourage the whole family to become involved with student learning. Here are some examples:

Math Bag-

Each week two families will take home the math bag. Each bag contains a range of math games and activities such as Snakes and Ladders, cards, work sheets, and mathematical bits and pieces.

Family Math Challenge-

In the newsletter there is a math problem that can be solved. The first family to hand in their answer to the question on Monday morning receives a prize and certificate.

Mathletics-

Mathletics is the most used program in Australia to improve student’s results in math. It is a different way of learning and helping students to enjoy their mathematics. The benefits of Mathletics are:

-         The students are motivated to improve

-         Curriculum can be set by teachers

-         Students receive rewards for their results
